Spring Is Here! What Should You Do as Soon as the Snow Is Gone?

As winter fades and the snow melts away, it’s time to start thinking about getting your lawn back into shape. Early spring is one of the most important times of the year for setting your lawn up for success. A little effort now will go a long way toward a healthy, green yard all season long.

At Oasis Lawn and Pest, we recommend starting with these essential steps as soon as your lawn is clear of snow:

1. Sharpen and Balance Your Lawn Mower Blade

Before you make that first cut of the season, make sure your lawn mower blade is sharpened and properly balanced. A sharp blade ensures a clean cut, which helps your grass stay healthy and reduces stress on the plant.

Dull blades tear the grass instead of cutting it, which can lead to browning and increased vulnerability to disease.

2. Spring Clean-Up: Clear Out Winter Debris

Winter tends to leave behind quite a mess—leaves, rocks, twigs, and other debris can all accumulate in your lawn and garden beds.

Start by thoroughly raking your yard to remove:

  • Leaves and organic debris
  • Twigs and branches
  • Rocks and any other unwanted materials

This step helps your lawn breathe and allows sunlight and nutrients to reach the soil.

3. Remove Thatch and Dead Grass

If your lawn has leftover dead grass or buildup from fall and winter, it’s a good idea to remove it. One effective way to do this is by using a dethatching blade on your lawn mower.

Dethatching helps:

  • Improve airflow to the soil
  • Speed up drying after snowmelt
  • Prevent mold or disease from forming in matted grass
  • Encourage healthy new growth

If your lawn experienced long periods of snow cover, you may notice areas of matted grass that could lead to mold—this step is especially important in those cases.

4. Bag and Dispose of Debris Properly

After raking and dethatching, be sure to bag up and dispose of all clippings, thatch, and debris. Leaving it on the lawn can smother new growth and slow down your lawn’s recovery.

5. Don’t Overdo It

While spring clean-up is important, you don’t need to go overboard. If your lawn doesn’t have a heavy thatch layer, a light cleanup is usually enough.

Every lawn is different, and overworking it can sometimes do more harm than good—especially when the ground is still soft from snowmelt.
